First, you will STILL need a hardcopy of the charts to play the game.  This program is here to help you look up MOST parts of the chart quickly and easily.  However, it can not completely replace all aspects of the charts.

You will still need to look up pitcher's rest, baserunner advancement on outs, singles, and doubles, and some other results.

You should also have the set of charts handy in case of program error (hopefully none), or user error!  Maybe you clicked on cancel too soon and didn't read the entire result.  You may also want to know your chances of certain outcomes before deciding what to do (stealing, baserunner advancement, etc.).

INSTALLATION -

Keep all files in one directory.  The name is not important, but wherever it is, they must all be there.  Removing files may cause the program to not operate.  You could use the dice roller, but not the charts.

If you right click "TPB Assistant.exe", you will have an option to "Pin to Start Menu" on Windows XP.  This is easiest and best for frequent players of TPB.  Then you just have to click the Windows XP Start button and the program will be right there.

If you right click "TPB Assistant.exe", you will also have an option to create a shortcut.  You can then copy and paste the shortcut to your desktop or quick bar depending on where you want it.

Do not attempt to change any of the season data.  In addition to being a sneaky move, the program has checks and safeguards to ensure the data is not tampered with.  TPB is best played with fun and honesty.

USING THE PROGRAM –

The program itself is usually self explanatory, and it will tell you what information it needs to use the charts.

If you keep the box labeled “Show Dice Rolls” checked, it will display the latest dice rolls in the big box for you.  This is advised if you don’t trust the program, or need to review the last few plays, you will have the numbers there.

On the BPE chart, you can select either RP or RSP for a right-handed batter, or LP or LSP for a left-handed batter for those seasons that only differentiate L and R.  For example, LP and LSP will have the same results in 2005 because the chart is designed that way.  Some previous seasons of TPB had different results for LP and LSP.

THE IFR CHART –

On the IFR chart, the “1B Holds Runner” is always checked in the beginning.  If there is no runner on first or you are not holding him, uncheck this box.  Once you uncheck this box, more options will be available to you.  Note that there is no difference between checking “Corners In” or “3B In” and “1B In”, it’s just easier to check one box.

If the Hit & Run is on, make sure to select that box as fielders will be moving around.

There is an additional box on this screen “DP In”.  On the charts, if you hit a DP to a fielder playing “in”, the result is different from a normal DP.  After selecting a defense, you can check this box ONLY IF YOU HAVE ROLLED A “DP” RESULT TO A FIELDER PLAYING IN.  You will have a different outcome depending on the roll of 1 additional die (per the charts).

Never adjust ranges on your own.  The program will handle that.  You can look at the bottom of most screens to learn what information you need to provide.  On some charts such as the “SB” and “Sending Runners?” charts, you will need to enter an ADJUSTED number.

DEEP –

Only enter clutch information if it is a clutch situation.  For example, if the hitter is “T”, but it’s the bottom of the 3rd with no runners on base, leave “Neither” selected.

CONNECTING OVER THE INTERNET –

Using Skype, you can share your TPB Assistant program using Unyte Application Sharing.  You can find the download and more information at www.tpbaseball.com/tpb_assistant.  Makes an easy way to play TPB with people all over the world.  It’s best if you also have a microphone and speakers, to avoid having to do too much typing!
